Roadtrip?

Brandywine Creek State Park - Still Unforgetable
Brandywine Creek State Park - Still Unforgettable Back in the day disc golfers didn’t talk about Warwick, Paw Paw or Patapsco as the major courses in the MADC Region; mainly because they were still just dreams in Dan, Spencer and Jim Myers heads at that time; no, the granddaddy of them all was Brandywine State Creek Park. Big blasting wide-open fairways through the winds of the rolling hills of the Delaware highlands. No matter where you are on the course there is a gorgeous view of the park and surrounding farms and estates. Few courses (Prompton, Codorus, Tinicum) are as breathtakingly beautiful and just a pleasure to walk as Brandywine. Steeped in MADC disc golf tradition and history Brandywine is a must play for anyone claiming to be a disc golf addict.

Mike Moser gets his 100th PDGA win at the 2006 Windjammer
by Brian Morris
The 2006 Windjammer is a PDGA “A” tier event held at Brandywine Creek State Park. This year’s event was held on October 28th and 29th. The Windjammer held true to its name with winds anywhere from 25-35 miles per hour and gusts at times up to 50! Very slight rain for about the first 3 or 4 holes did not dampen the event like some had thought (the players who stayed home). In the end, Mike Moser netted his 100th PDGA victory, which made for a nice end to the 2006 tournament season.
The scene looked dreary as competitors arrived at Brandywine Creek State Park on Saturday morning. At 8 a.m. it was raining and the wind was gusting. Players who showed up to make the late registration were optimistic that the weather conditions would improve, and they did, with the exception of the wind.
The first round got started at approximately 9:30 with partly cloudy conditions and occasional wind gusts, but overall the first round was probably the best conditions of the weekend.
At the end of the first round, Mike Moser led the Open division of the tournament, posting a 49 with a player rating of 1064. Markus Kallstrom, formerly of Sweden, but now living in Pennsylvania shot a 52. Local Brian Strojny shot a 53, and Two-time defending champion from New Jersey, Steve Brinster, shot a 54.
The Masters division was led by Jim Myers with a 54, and Joe Mela with a 55. The Advanced division was led by Mike Karp, with a 61, and Stewart Krall, who shot a 63.
The second round finished with Mike Moser shooting a 53, and Markus Kallstrom shooting a 56. Jeff Cahill shot his way into the lead group by posting a 56, and Bobby Cowperthwait posted a respectable 57 to join the lead group for the third round. Jim Myers increased his lead in the Masters division by posting a 56 putting him in driving position for the third round with a several stroke lead.
After the second round, many of the players went to Damon’s where the Delaware Disc Golfers hosted a player’s party that was truly a fun time. Players exchanged stories about their experience in the wind that they faced and watched disc golf videos.
The third round kicked off in less than ideal conditions. The wind was forecasted to blow at 25-35 miles per hour all day with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. The course was a true test of both will and ability as players battled it out to place in their respective divisions.
The third round started and Moser was on a mission. He was now leading the field by several strokes and he was focused in the howling conditions. He shot a 57. Kallstrom shot a solid 56 to win the round. Steve Brinster shot a 58 to join the lead group, and Nick Schneider from shot a 61 to get added to the lead card for the final round.
It was mentioned by many players that the fourth round was the windiest and most grueling of the tournament. Moser continued to cruise with a 54. This put Mike in first place with a (-3), and he received $940. Markus Kallstrom shot a 59 to finish in second place (+7), and $650 bucks. Steve Brinster shot a solid 56 to seal a third place (+11) and $470. Nick Schneider placed fourth with a (+19). Locals Brian Strojny and Jamie Brentlinger tied at +22 to tie for 5th. Closing out those pro’s who cashed include Bard Soleng (7th), Bobby Cowperthwait (8th), Steve Johnson and John DeBois tied for 9th.
The Masters division was won by Jim Myers, shooting a (+7) and receiving $450. Joe Mela got 2nd, shooting a +20. They were followed by Wayne Zink in 3rd, Linc Morgan in 4th, Keith Brace in 5th, and rounding it out was local Joe Corradin tying Dean Pfeifer for 6th.
The advanced division was won by Derek Britt. Derek shot a (+40), follwed by John Murphy with a (+42), Tim Reyes with a (+47), and Alan Sweeton at (+50) to round out the top four. Advanced masters was won by Greg Wheeler. Advanced women’s division was won by Kit Bassett.
Lesli Denmark shot a (+65) for the tournament to take the women’s open pro division. Amy Moser shot a (+80) to take 2nd.
When all was said and done and the tournament concluded it was cool and the wind finally stopped. Bill Yerd and Steve Winchester ran another fine tournament. This one, however, will be known forever as the one that fit the tournament’s name because the wind was jamming!
Congratulations to Mike Moser for getting his 100th career PDGA tournament win.
